Federal government Warns Police - Do not Attack Navy

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, on Friday issued a stern warning to officers and men of the Cross River State Police Command to not retaliate Tuesday’s attack on the Akim police headquarters in Calabar by some ratings of the Nigerian Navy.

A naval rating was on Tuesday shot within the shoulder by a policeman after arguments over traffic infractions. things later degenerated to a fracas during which two policemen were killed by naval operatives while a neighborhood of the Akim police headquarters , along the IBB Way, was burnt.

The Inspector-General of Police, who inspected the burnt facilities at the police headquarters including two vehicles, said an independent panel of inquiry would soon be found out to unearth those behind the fracas.

Idris, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police responsible of coaching and Capacity Development, Mr. Emmanuel Inyang, said it had been unfortunate that a minor incident was allowed to escalate to the extent it need to .

The DIG, alongside the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Abubakar Marafa and therefore the Commander, Nigeria Navy Ship Victory, Commodore Salihu Jibril, also because the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, visited the 2 policemen injured at the Police Clinic and therefore the naval rating at Navy Clinic in Calabar.

While addressing officers and men of the Akim police headquarters , Inyang urged his men not take the law into their hands, adding that the Police had over the years maintained cordial relationships with the military and other security agencies.
