A previous South African mail station laborer who severely assaulted and killed a college understudy has been condemned to life in jail.



The Western Cape High Court on Friday, November 2015, condemned Luyanda Botha for the assault and murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana,19, who was an understudy at the University of Cape Town.

The court heard that Botha, 42, confessed to assaulting and executing the UCT understudy in August 2019.

Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe gave Botha a lifelong incarceration for homicide, two life sentences on the two tallies of assault, and five years for overcoming the course of equity. The five-year sentence will run simultaneously.
