Guards face mounting questions for suspected killers escape

Experts say that the brazen escapes of three suspected murderers in separate incidents in recent days are raising questions about how well law enforcement can lock up prisoners.

Michael Burham, who authorities described as a "self-taught survivalist" and a former Army reserve sergeant, remained on the run Wednesday as a reward for information leading to his capture increased to $19,500. While two of the escapees, both the subject of massive manhunts, were apprehended, the third escaped. Six days after escaping the Warren County Jail in Pennsylvania, he is believed to be armed and dangerous, according to authorities. He is hiding in the woods in northeastern Pennsylvania.

"In view of all that I've seen, I truly do accept he is getting help," Lt. Col. Burham was mentioned by George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police during a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, an escape-minded prisoner is alleged to have killed Indiana Sheriff's Deputy John Drum, 61, on Monday night, according to authorities. Drum is said to have been assaulted by 34-year-old Orlando Mitchell as the deputy drove him to the Indianapolis Adult Detention Center from a hospital. Officials stated that the prisoner, who is accused of killing his girlfriend in 2022, allegedly stole a sheriff's department transport wagon and crashed it in an effort to escape. He was taken into custody quickly.

"It's an opportunity, and they're taking it," stated Robert Boyce, a former Chief of Detectives for the New York Police Department, regarding the factors that encourage numerous inmates to attempt an escape.

Additionally, Boyce, a contributor to ABC News, stated that many escapes take place during the summer, which may account for the recent rash of prisoners fleeing.

Inmates serving lengthy sentences or facing serious charges like murder "are the most likely to escape," according to adjunct professor Bryce Peterson, who told ABC News that many of the escapees also appear to have the motivation to run.
