Missing Army Cpl. Hayden Harris found dead in New Jersey after vehicle exchange with fellow soldier, officials say

 BYRAM, N.J. — A U.S. Armed force officer who disappeared from Fort Drum in upstate New York has been discovered dead in New Jersey and an individual trooper has been arrested regarding his demise. 


The assortment of Hayden Harris was found in a lush zone in Byram Township on Saturday evening, Sussex County First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller said. U.S. Armed force authorities gave little detail past affirming Harris' demise in an official statement on Sunday evening. 



Harris was most recently seen between 8 p.m. Dec. 17 and 6:30 a.m. Dec. 18, as per Army authorities. 


Mueller said Harris was meeting with individual trooper, Jamaal Mellish, 23, in Watertown, New York, close to Fort Drum for "some kind of vehicle trade" when the gathering raised.

Specialists trust Mellish "snatched" Harris in Harris' 2017 white Chevrolet Silverado and drove him to the New York City territory and in the end across the state, Mueller said. An adolescent, whose personality has not been delivered, was likewise in the vehicle, specialists said. 


Mueller said Harris was slaughtered in the lush territory in Byram. 


Byram firemen discovered the scene Saturday when they saw individual possessions close to the Ross Road parkway, including a couple of shoes. They told Byram police when they discovered blood, Mueller said. 


Mellish was arrested in Watertown, Mueller said. He is being held anticipating a removal hearing to Sussex County. 


The information on Harris' vanishing spread via web-based media after the U.S. Armed force Fort Drum and tenth Mountain Division looked for the public's help finding the Tennessee local. 


Harris was after death elevated to the position of corporal after his passing and granted the Army Commendation Medal, Army authorities said. A vigil by Harris' unit had been progressing since he disappeared. 


Harris joined the Army in March 2019. He showed up in Fort Drum in July 2019 subsequent to preparing at Fort Benning, Georgia. 


Harris was promoted as a "extraordinary officer" by Brig. Gen. Brett Funck, acting senior officer of the tenth Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and Fort Drum. 


"As we share our anguish with his loved ones, I hear over and over how he was likewise — and above all — a truly brilliant, caring individual," Funck said. "His demise is a colossal misfortune for his friends and family, this Division and our country." 


Harris' honors and improvements incorporate two Army Achievement Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. He graduated Air Assault School in 2019.
