Samuel Animashaun Perry is a comedian, actor, songwriter, and musician who goes by the name Broda Shaggi. Sagamu, Ogun State, is the hometown of the two-time winner of the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Actor in a Comedy, Movie, or TV Series in 2022 and 2023. Broda Shaggi graduated from the University of Lagos with a degree in creative arts. His father taught drama, which sparked his interest in acting. He is well-known for his satirical plays that he posts on social media, where he first became popular for his short comedy skits. In addition, this has led to opportunities to appear in films and release music. He discusses his many sides and his passion for creativity in this interview with IJEOMA Thomas-ODIA.
How did you get started in the film industry?
I can say that I started my journey into the film industry years ago. Since I was a teenager, it has always been a part of me. I have always participated in creative performances like stage plays, dance competitions, and shows. As a result, I started a group called "Stage addicts" when I got into the University of Lagos. We performed at school functions all over campus. We also performed in off-campus venues. I would attend movie role auditions while doing that. I got welcomed for certain motion pictures as 'Waka pass' job. In the first part of Wedding Party, I played a member of the crowd in the wedding scene. The brand Broda Shaggi exploded as I continued to push for more roles. Toyin Abraham's Fate Of Alakada is one of the major films that established me as an actor. I started getting big roles in movies after that.
Do you intend to start making your own movies?
I strongly advocate taking steps gradually. As large as I might focus on great many individuals this moment, I'm actually learning. The world of entertainment encompasses a great deal. If you feel like you have the weight, you shouldn't rush from one aspect to another. In essence, I'm doing well right now as an actor, performer, and writer of skits. A strategy with a broader scope is definitely a movie production. It is planned for growth, so it will happen.
How well do you think you are doing in creating content?
The creation of content is the new "oil." It is a versatile phenomenon that every business with a focus on growth draws on. One of my greatest accomplishments thus far as a content creator is that my team, led by Olufemi Oguntamu, has been successful in securing endorsement deals, which will be made public at a later date. Additionally, I have gained more patronage and recognition from prominent brands. All of these depend on my craft being consistent. I always give my all to delivering new levels of creativity.
Which of your activities for your brand is easiest for you?
I cannot specifically name any. I actually enjoy doing anything arts-related. My natural state is to be creative. I move easily from one aspect to another. However, if you insist, I would choose acting.
The majority of your skits focus on the human angle. Is that a market niche you've carved out for yourself?
I always make sure that the majority of my skits don't end without sending messages to people. As creative people, we owe the society a great service by making it better than it was when we first met it. "A theatre, a literature, an artistic expression that does not speak for its own time and people has no relevance," said Dario Fo, a well-known philosopher and arts scholar. This is because, regardless of the subject matter, the majority of my works are satirical. I also love Fo's assertion that "satire can always be found everywhere." A people that doesn't like satire is dead.' It makes us see our actual selves by means of giggling, while we focus on adjustments that are expected to be made. This is entirely focused on improving the society as a whole. Fans from all over the world recommend that I watch any of my skits every day as a form of therapy.
What skit brought you the fame and fortune you now enjoy?
Actually, before I played Broda Shaggi, I did a few skits with other characters. Before Broda Shaggi, I performed in skits as Inspector Perry and Akanni Ibadan. My first major skit as Broda Shaggi was a duet with my interviewer at the time, Aunty Shaggi, in which she asked, "What will I do if I see Jesus in Mushin?" Because it raised concerns from a variety of angles, the skit became a viral sensation. Some people interpreted it as controversial, believing that I had made a joke out of the name Jesus. However, I did not intend to be blasphemous, and as a creative, I did not view it in that light. That skit made the Broda Shaggi character stand out, and as I've grown and changed over the years, I've fired more consistently and committedly.
What do you think about skit makers competing with Nollywood?
I can't pinpoint a precise criterion for such an opinion, so I don't believe it to be true. All I can say is that the industry of making skits is doing well on its own. We can all easily agree that with the help of social media, skit makers are easily recognized by people all over the world. This has led to filmmakers paying more attention to them because of their number of followers and online engagements, which is also important for movie marketing.
What are your expectations for the creative industry from the new administration?
It seems premature to have expectations for the new administration, in my opinion. I pray that they are kind to us all, regardless of their plans. I am eager to see the government at all levels take a greater interest in the power of content and create an environment that encourages creative endeavors.
