A murder suspect arrested in Ogun says he smoked marijuana before beating his friend to death after he demanded N7k he borrowed from him

Onu Thomas Stephen, the guillotine man who allegedly killed his colleague and girlfriend Anayo Francis over a dispute over an unpaid loan of N7,000, has admitted that he smelled marijuana before the incident.

Stephen was arrested by detectives from the Ogun State Police Sango Division for allegedly stabbing 23-year-old Francis with a kitchen knife after the suspect demanded N7,000 that he had borrowed.

Francis repeatedly appealed to Stephen to pay the money, but he was reportedly furious when the suspect refused to pay, even though he received his salary.

On that fateful day, Frances had information that Stephen had received his salary, so she went to him and demanded money, but the suspect claimed that he had no money, and a heated argument ensued, leading to a fight.

During the fight, the suspect, who lived in the room, reportedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Francis in the chest. Spokesperson of the Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident, said the injured victim was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Stephen, 28, a resident of Idoma from Benue State, told the Sunday Tribune in an interview that he came to Ogun State in January 2022 to begin scaffolding work for a church in Ota.

The suspect described his circumstances leading up to the stabbing of his friend and colleague: “My friend (Francis) was from Imo State. He was also involved in scaffolding work. I gave him a certificate to get the job. A friend from Benue brought it to me.

“My wife gave birth to a child and I didn't have any money. ``When I asked Mr. Anayo to help me, he lent me 7,000 naira. Of the 30,000 naira the hospital charged, I gave him 20,000 naira. I paid an additional Naira.”

"After that, we didn't have food for more than a month. With my job, there was no money." When I finally got the money, I told Anayo to be patient because I owed over 70,000 naira to many people and he was my friend. I told him I would pay him the next time I got money. This was discussed during our work.

"However, he left the office before me and went to my room to discuss the matter with my wife and ask if I had returned from work. I asked what happened and Frances came knocking on my door asking me where I was. “Angrily, I turned to Francis and asked him why he had humiliated me when I owed him. I gave him the certificate and told him to submit it for employment. After making a copy, he said he had not collected the money.

“Before I could finish speaking, Francis lunged at me and a fight started. During the scuffle, I turned around, grabbed a knife and accidentally stabbed him.

“When I saw him bleeding, I realized I had stabbed him. I quickly grabbed him and rushed to Ota General Hospital. I was then asked to file a police report. When they returned to the hospital with police, they were told that Francis had died.

"Right now, I don't understand how this happened. My brain still hasn't deciphered how we got to this stage." I'm not a person who's used to arguing with people. ”

However, the suspect admitted to smoking marijuana and said he and her friend smelled marijuana before the fight.
