IDF releases image of wanted Hamas commander holding wad of US dollars

The Israeli military has released new images showing a suspicious Hamas military commander relaxing outdoors and holding a wad of US dollars as the group continues to hunt the commander in the Gaza Strip.

The image shows Mohamed Deif, the leader of the terrorist group Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, holding a half-full plastic cup in one hand and a wad of US dollar bills in the other. The photo shows him casually checking his watch.

The suspect was found among some 70 million digital files that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had unearthed in the Gaza Strip, and is believed to be hiding in the terrorist organization's extensive network of underground tunnels.

Deif, known as "The Guest" for his habit of constantly moving around the enclave to avoid detection by Israelis, was the person behind the start of Hamas's murderous rampage in southern Israel on October 7.

The Israeli military has not disclosed when or where the photo was taken, or how or where the Israeli military obtained the image. A new photo shows a gray-haired 58-year-old man sitting on a sandbank in front of two pairs of shoes, while an unknown man appears to be counting his stash of US dollars next to him.

His right eye appears to be missing.

A shadowy figure, he has been on Israel's most wanted list for nearly 30 years and has survived at least seven assassination attempts that left him with visual and motor disabilities.

His wife, young son and three-year-old daughter reportedly died in the attack on him.

Last month, Israeli media reported that Israeli Defense Forces troops stationed in Gaza were able to find him, who was injured in an attack possibly carried out by Hamas, walking on his own with a slight limp and using a wheelchair to get through a tunnel. They said they found video footage of the fish crossing the net.

Born in 1965 in Khan Yunis, Gaza, he has been described as a "cat with nine lives" after surviving numerous assassination attempts. He is also known by the names Mohammed Diab and Mohammed al-Masri.

Photos of Hamas commanders are rare. Last week, Israeli media published images purportedly taken at a social event in 2018, which were also discovered by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
