The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has stressed the significance of enhancing nationwide teacher training in phonics and mathematics and science education (SMASE).
SMASE and Jolly Phonics have been incorporated into the country's Universal Basic Education (UBE) program for more than a decade, according to Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the commission. He made the remark during a workshop to increase the capacity of teachers in mathematics and science.
Bobboyi mentioned that SMASE has been a significant program that has contributed to strengthening the study of science and mathematics in basic education. He was represented from the commission by Prof. Bala Zakari.
He said that the commission has always used the Teachers Professional Development (TPD) fund to train teachers to increase their SMASE capacity.
The UBE programs have had the two programs in place for more than a decade. I dare to assert that SMASE has been a significant program that has enhanced the UBE's science and mathematics curriculum. Science and mathematics are always given high priority in any developed nation or world that wants to advance technologically. Nigeria is not left out of this desire to advance science and technology.
“It has also given priority to the teaching of science and mathematics using the methodology that is prescribed in the SMASE program. Having adopted SMASE after its introduction by JICA in 2006 and piloted it in three states, Kaduna, Plateau, and Niger,” the statement reads.
“After the program was handed over, UBEC decided to continue investing the TPD fund in teacher training in order to increase teachers' SMASE capacity. This is because teachers play such an important role in delivering the program, he said.
The boss of UBEC said that the commission on early-grade reading has chosen the jolly phonics program as its flagship program.
He stated that it is essential to emphasize the significance of reading to a student's life, noting that a student who is able to read at an early age is not likely to drop out of school and almost certainly will succeed because the foundation for further education and personal growth has been established.
He added, "The commission adopted the Jolly Phonics program and its methodology for building the capacity of teachers in basic education to enable them to teach reading effectively in schools in view of this fact."
Aleshin Olumayowa, the commission's Director of Teachers Development, stated that SMASE is utilized to instruct teachers on how to improvise and assist students in science and mathematics.
Olumayowa went on to say that it also makes it easier for students to learn the material and helps teachers teach it well.
“A learner will not learn and there will be no learning outcomes if the teacher does not know how to deliver and deliver properly. Therefore, students will learn in a straightforward and efficient manner if you improve the teacher's ability to effectively teach the subject at hand.
